The United Nations established the International Day of Charity to highlight the significance of philanthropy and as a reminder of the vital role that acts of kindness and generosity play in addressing global challenges. Observed annually on September 5, its goal is to promote compassion, solidarity, and the spirit of giving—while motivating people to come together through volunteer and philanthropic activities. Known for her philanthropy and dedication to service, September 5 commemorates Mother Teresa’s passing and recognizes her commitment to alleviating poverty and selfless acts of kindness.

With a focus on eradicating poverty worldwide, the International Day of Charity works to spread the message of humanity and the positive impacts philanthropy can make for under-resourced individuals. While many impactful Maximus Foundation grantee partners embody this work, in recognition of the International Day of Charity, we’d like to highlight several partners working to reduce and eliminate the effects of poverty in their communities.

  • Meals on Wheels South Florida – Since 1984, the organization has provided nutritious meals and safety checks to home-bound seniors over 60 in Broward County. Serving more than 10,000 clients annually throughout South Florida, volunteers also help feed the pets of home-bound seniors and shop for those who can’t navigate a grocery store.
  • Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard – “The Hub” provides healthy, nutritious foods to community members in the Bloomington, Indiana, area to help build a sense of community and address the root causes of hunger. In 2022, the Hub distributed over one million pounds of food to 50,000 patrons, providing a community garden, tools to learn about gardening, and a cooking program to prepare healthy foods on a budget. Additionally, the Hub works to meet the immediate needs of its community and addresses the root cause of hunger through its advocacy program that asks, "Why are so many in need of emergency food services in the first place?"
  • Housing Families – Serving the greater Boston area, Housing Families uplifts individuals and families through a holistic approach to housing stability through personalized services, including temporary and permanent housing, food assistance, individual counseling and group therapy, legal assistance, and youth programs. In 2022, they served 3,300 individuals across various programs on homelessness prevention, child hunger and nutrition services, and youth enrichment and education programs.
  • People’s Community Clinic – The People’s Community Clinic has provided high-quality, affordable healthcare to Central Texans for over 50 years. As a true safety net for uninsured and medically underserved people, the clinic offers health and wellness services, including medical care, adult dental care, integrated pain management, lactation consultant services, and early literacy programming. In 2022, People's served more than 20,000 patients through over 79,600.

On this International Day of Charity, we recognize the vital work of these organizations - and the many others we work with - and the part they play in eradicating poverty. Celebrate this impactful day by contacting a local organization where you live to learn how you can help give back today.
