The older adult population nationwide is rapidly growing and changing. One in four Americans is over 60 years old. Of that population, 29% have disabilities, 24% live alone, and 13% are Veterans. With almost seven million older adults identified as food insecure in 2022, the issue of hunger and the many other challenges they face, such as social isolation, put them at an already high risk for poor health outcomes.
Last summer, the Maximus New Jersey State-Based Exchange team partnered with Meals on Wheels to deliver lunches to the homes of older individuals and people with disabilities. The Meals on Wheels network comprises 5,000 community-based programs nationwide dedicated to addressing hunger and isolation among older adults. Annually, Meals on Wheels serves more than 250 million meals to 2.2 million people, where they have seen improved health outcomes and helped local community members to live independently.
Maximus volunteers supported more than 100 Meals on Wheels recipients in their community.
