Maximus Human Resources Manager Penny Shepard moved from Phoenix to Smithville, Texas, and was searching for a new community of her own.

“In moving to Smithville, with a population of 4,000, from Phoenix, with a population of 4,000,000, it was recommended to join the Smithville Noon Lions Club to meet people,” she said.

Today, Penny is in her second year as a board secretary and truly sees how an organization like the Lions Club can impact the community. Smithville Noon Lions Club is a service organization with members deeply committed to their community. It is part of the Lions International network, which has 1.4 million members in 49,000 clubs that aim to help millions of community members every year.

Through fundraising and special initiatives, the organization supports many efforts, including childhood cancer and wellbeing, health and hunger, humanitarian and disaster relief, and environmental concerns.

Since joining, Penny and other members of the organization have created a tremendous impact in their community. They raised more than $20,000 to support the local Smithville Little League in their efforts to rebuild their structures after falling victim to arson.

In partnership with the volunteer fire department, the team raised $10,000 at the annual fish fry to award college scholarships to high school seniors.

This is an amazing group of just ordinary people that want to take care of our community. They give their time, money, and sweat to do just that. What is our motto? ‘We Serve’ (and we are proud to do it).

Giving back to the communities we serve

The Maximus Foundation is one of the ways Maximus colleagues are doing something greater together. Established by the Maximus Board of Directors in 2000, the Maximus Foundation is an independent, colleague-led, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Maximus team members pool their charitable contributions together through the Foundation, double their impact on the grantmaking program through Maximus’ dollar-for-dollar matching pledge, and make their voices heard by nominating and voting for future grantee partners. Though the Foundation focuses its giving strategy on grantmaking, it also helps coordinate corporate-wide humanitarian efforts and empowers staff to donate their time and skills to nonprofits. Their inspired giving and volunteerism help accelerate the missions of nonprofits on the front lines of the communities we serve. Learn more at the Maximus Foundation website.
