JVS SoCal is an employment services organization in Los Angeles. They help individuals prepare for and obtain better jobs by providing career assessment, skills building, and training programs. One program they offer is JVS Veterans First. This program is specifically aimed at assisting veterans in transitioning from military to civilian employment.

Funding support from the Maximus Foundation helped provide trained career coaching for veterans, which begins by assessing:

  • interests
  • personality attributes
  • skill levels
  • barriers to employment
  • goals

Veterans can then take advantage of the resources JVS has to offer, including:

  • resume writing workshops
  • interview coaching sessions
  • veteran-specific networking events, job fairs, and recruitment events
  • job search skill-building workshops
  • vocational training
  • job placement assistance and job retention services

In 2019, nearly 1,000 veterans, spouses, or reservists received intensive career coaching services from JVS. One participant shared, “I was unemployed for 5 months when I found JVS Veterans First, where I was able to discover a new career path for myself. They helped me obtain my A+ and Security+ certifications, which helped me quickly became a full-time Enterprise Help Desk Specialist position. I am now pursuing a career in cybersecurity using the skills and assistance I obtained from JVS Veterans First.”
