The first Monday of every October in the United States is dedicated to the most important thing in a child’s life – their health. The U.S. has marked National Child Health Day every year since 1929, almost a full century.

At Maximus, children’s health is one of our top priorities every day through our government health work as we support programs aimed at improving the nation’s public health.

One key program that deserves recognition on its day has reached a milestone anniversary this year and Maximus joins in celebrating its success – the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) was signed into federal law 25 years ago.

In the quarter century since, the program has offered free- or low-cost insurance coverage to children in families with income too high to qualify for Medicaid. CHIP has dramatically reduced the number of uninsured children nationwide and Maximus has supported the program in myriad ways since its inception. We are proud to continue our partnership with states to support this vital program and further its benefits to bring health care, along with the financial security and peace of mind that comes with it, to families across the country.

Today, Maximus partners with fifteen states across the country to enroll children in CHIP. The company’s U.S. Segment supports states by providing culturally and linguistically tailored outreach and education to families to increase awareness about CHIP. Additionally, Maximus assists families in applying for coverage, operates consumer call centers to answer questions about the program, and provides families with conflict-free help selecting a health plan that best meets their needs.

CHIP is jointly funded by the federal government and states and administered at the state level. As of May 2022, CHIP provided coverage to 7 million children, with eligibility levels that are based on income and vary by state.

The program is notable for offering comprehensive coverage that includes routine check-ups, immunizations, doctor’s visits, behavioral health care and dental and vision services and benefits, that, like income levels, vary by state.

During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, CHIP served as a vital and crucial safety net for families, as it ensured they were able to access health care for their children as their circumstances changed. It was another reminder of how critical CHIP has become in its 25 years, and why Maximus wants to ensure its success for another 25 years.

For Maximus, CHIP is just one of the programs where the company works alongside states to make a difference in the lives and health of children. Maximus also assists states with eligibility and enrollment for children in Medicaid, provides services for foster care children and assists states in administering child welfare programs. Our company’s tagline of “Moving People Forward” is more than just a slogan, it’s the foundation of what we do as a company daily.

At Maximus, we are committed to support states as they help keep children healthy and growing strong.

Happy Anniversary CHIP! Here’s to another 25 years of success.
