Foundation Board Member spotlight: Paula Wales

Paula's story

Paula Wales, Managing Director of Medicaid Enterprise System, joined Maximus in 2012 through the acquisition of Policy Studies Inc. (PSI) after being with the company since 1992. She first heard about the Maximus Foundation from Dr. John Boyer, former Foundation board chairperson, who approached her after learning about her efforts in leading an employee giving campaign at PSI. 

My motivation for becoming a board member resides in my personal commitment to working with nonprofit organizations that address the needs of children experiencing abuse and neglect and, specifically, those in foster care. The fact that the Foundation was funded by both the employees and the company was what made me join.

As an engaged board member, Paula has had the privilege of witnessing the Foundation’s positive impact on local nonprofits to help them achieve their mission. As an advocate for children, she reflects on one of her favorite memories with the Denver Children’s Home, one of the Foundation’s grantee partners.

“They [Denver Children’s Home] are a therapeutic residential center for children and their families experiencing abuse, neglect, and trauma. For the holidays, PSI and Maximus have donated gifts for the children,” she reflected. “My favorite memory was being asked to help judge their science fair. It was incredibly uplifting to talk with the children, who were enthusiastic about their projects – amidst all of their challenges – and loved having someone listen, ask questions, and show interest in what they had accomplished.”

As a board member, Paula considers it an incredible opportunity to honor Maximus and her colleagues by supporting the grantmaking process. Over the years, she and her fellow board members have helped to process hundreds of nonprofit applications, witnessing the pipeline of local nonprofit changemakers becoming Maximus grantee partners.  

“The Maximus Foundation is the tangible expression of the commitment of the Maximus staff and the company to reach into our communities and assist those organizations that are changing lives,” she said.

Paula will be stepping down from her position on the board after many impactful years of service, and the Foundation is incredibly thankful for her contributions. Though she will no longer be a board member, her passion and dedication to the communities we serve will continue to inspire us for years to come.

A 25-year legacy of giving back to the communities we serve

Founded by the Maximus Board of Directors in 2000, the Maximus Foundation is an independent, colleague-led, 501(c)(3) nonprofit. We envision a world transformed by strategic partnerships. Maximus staff double their impact through a corporate dollar-for-dollar matching pledge and actively participate in nominating and voting for future grantee partners. We focus on promoting community-led change through equitable partnerships with the Foundation to build strong communities, advance health equity land wellbeing, and equipping individuals and families with the resources they need to thrive. By centering Maximus staff in decision-making, we accelerate the missions of nonprofits that uplift the communities they call home. 

The Foundation also facilitates company-wide humanitarian initiatives and encourages staff to volunteer their unique talents and time.
