Company evolution

Over the last five decades, Maximus has grown and evolved to help ensure that our clients continue to provide compassion and innovative solutions to the people they serve.

In the beginning, there were paper timesheets and snail mail. The tools were different, but the work was just as meaningful. As time marched on, our impact grew. Local projects turned to global impact. Silos progressed to collaboration. From its inception in 1975, when we secured our first state contract in New Hampshire, we have evolved into a global organization with over 40,000 employees worldwide.

Company mission

When it comes to our mission, no one describes it better than our people — those who live it every day.

“Our mission that began as ‘Helping Government Serve the People’ and more recently was updated to become ‘Moving People Forward,’” said Bruce Caswell, our President and Chief Executive Officer. “[This] reflects our enduring commitment to serve all people with whom we work each day, in a manner that reflects our values, in particular compassion, customer focus, and respect.”

Caswell continued saying, like many of Maximus’ employees, he was drawn to the company because of its mission — to our customers, or the ability to be part of how we transform the delivery of government services to more than 100 million Americans and millions more in the United Kingdom, Canada, and the Gulf. 

Company success

For 50 years, our people have been the heart of Maximus. They’ve shaped a culture built on purpose, pride, and a commitment to helping others. That commitment shows up in how we work as one team. We succeed because we stand together.

Our ability to adapt to complex challenges is made possible by our incredible team. Some of the key milestones we're most proud of include:

• Securing our first federal contract in April 1976 for Medicaid quality control.
• Expanding globally into markets such as the United Kingdom, Canada, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and India.
• Supporting major reforms like the Affordable Care Act and responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.
• In the UK, delivering health assessment services for the Department for Work and Pensions.
• In Canada, implementing the Medigent suite to streamline healthcare administration.
• In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, transforming support for vulnerable communities through Tamkeen Clinics.
• In India, providing a strategic extension of U.S. operations to drive innovation and technology services.

We also marked some milestone moments during our 50th year, including ringing the NYSE closing bell, hosting our first in-person Global Leadership Conference since the pandemic, and gathering to celebrate our 50-year legacy. 

Looking forward

As we look to the future, we remain committed to harnessing technology to modernize, increase efficiency and security, and drive meaningful changes using innovative solutions, artificial intelligence, robotic process automation, and the Total Experience Management (TXM) platform.

“While our business has transformed dramatically from its earliest days, our values have not,” Caswell said. “We continue to evolve in the complexity of the work we undertake, the importance of technology as both a catalyst and differentiator to our success, and the customers whose missions we support — much of what has grounded us over the decades remains.” Maximus has both a tangible and intangible impact on the people we serve, he added.
